October 2021 is the eighteenth year the nation has celebrated National Cybersecurity Month. There are many technology recognition days throughout the year, however, this one is perhaps the most important one of all.
History of National CybersecurityAwareness Month
In 2004, the National Cyber Security Alliance and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) launched Cybersecurity Awareness Month to remind all Americans to stay safe and secure online. In 2011, they introduced weekly themes to better articulate current threats. This year’s theme includes:
- Week 1: Be Cyber Smart – Take simple actions to keep our digital lives secure.
- Week 2: Fight the Phish!– How to create awareness, protect, identify, respond and report suspicious emails that can lead to malware and ransomware attacks.
- Week 3: Explore. Experience. Share.– This is cybersecurity educations awareness week created to increase the global cybersecurity workforce.
- Week 4: Cybersecurity First – Virtual remote workforce cybersecurity awareness.
Importance of National Cybersecurity Awareness Month
Global dependence on the internet has grown immensely since the first National Cybersecurity Awareness Month meeting. Since then, we have seen substantial growth in:
- Internet of Things
- Regulatory Enforcements
- Virtual Workforce
- New Threats – including mobile devices, supply chain, and medical devices, to name a few.
Today’s cybercriminals are savvier and more sophisticated than ever before. Unfortunately, most end-users have not increased their level of awareness to meet the current threats. That’s why it is important to have an annual review for cybersecurity awareness, prevention, and response.
